How to Get Pine Tree Sap Out of Clothes (Without Ruining Them)
Pine tree sap is one of those sticky, stubborn messes that seems impossible to get out of your clothes—especially if it's already dried. Whether you were hiking, doing yard work, or just enjoying a picnic under the trees, we’ve got your back (and your clothes). Here's how to remove pine sap from clothing without damaging the fabric.
🧼 Step 1: Freeze It or Harden It
Before you do anything, you want the sap to harden so it’s easier to scrape off.
Option A: Use Ice
Place a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and apply it to the sap for 5–10 minutes.
Once the sap is hardened, gently scrape off as much as you can using a dull knife, spoon, or even a credit card.
Option B: Pop It in the Freezer
If it’s a small item (like a t-shirt), you can fold the sap-stained area and place it in the freezer for 30–60 minutes.
Then, scrape off the hardened sap.
🧴 Step 2: Break Down the Residue With a Grease-Fighter
Once you've removed the bulk of the sap, you're left with that sticky, resinous stain. Here’s how to fight it:
Try One of These:
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
Hand sanitizer (with alcohol)
Nail polish remover (acetone-based — test fabric first)
Goo Gone or citrus-based cleaners
WD-40 (for tougher, outdoor fabrics)
🧽 Instructions:
Apply a small amount to a clean cloth or cotton ball.
Dab the sap stain—don’t rub hard, or you may spread it.
Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then gently blot and lift the sap.
⚠ Important: Always test a small, hidden part of the fabric first to make sure it won’t damage the color or material.
🧺 Step 3: Wash It Out
Now it’s time to get rid of the cleaner and any remaining residue:
Pre-treat the spot with liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover.
Let it sit for 10–15 minutes.
Wash the item in the hottest water safe for the fabric (check the tag).
Air dry only—if the sap isn’t fully gone, heat from the dryer can make it permanent.
💡 Bonus Tips
Don’t delay—the longer sap sits, the tougher it gets.
For delicate fabrics (like silk or wool), consider taking it to a professional cleaner.
